 Boarding Hostel Manager

The Poto College House Board of Trustees invites applications for the position of Boarding Hostel Manager. Poto College House provides a boarding environment for students of Wairarapa College.

Poto College House caters for 60+ boarders within a co-educational environment. We accommodate Years 9-13 boarders in a 5 ½ day capacity. Poto College House is set in the iconic surrounds of Wairarapa College and is a short walk across the school oval from the College. Established as a boys’ boarding house initially in 1924, College House is steeped in history and tradition. As a co-educational boarding establishment, it is unique to the Wairarapa and is the College’s point of difference offering an affordable option to remote rural children from the Wairarapa and those from neighbouring districts who choose to make Poto College House their home away from home. Poto College House has a strong community focus and is a much-valued educational boarding establishment within the community. The boarders represent the College successfully in academic, cultural and sporting capacities and are encouraged to be actively involved in the life of the hostel and the College.

Wairarapa College itself is a state co-educational college with a roll of 1100 students. Established in 1938 it has served its local and neighbouring communities offering a quality academic, cultural and sporting education. It prides itself in its strong tradition yet embraces modern learning initiatives for today’s young learners and tomorrow’s leaders.

The Boarding Hostel Manager will demonstrate leadership, collaboration, and management skills necessary to meet the Poto College House Trust’s goals of providing a supportive, positive, caring and inclusive environment for teenagers who often have very different needs: welfare is paramount. The Manager will lead the hostel team of staff and oversee the catering and domestic team to ensure a healthy and safe environment is provided for all boarding students. An enthusiastic and solutions based working relationship with the College is essential for the care of all boarders.

To be successful the applicant needs to have:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Genuine empathy for adolescents of all backgrounds and the ability and flexibility to understand and meet their needs.
  • A strong moral compass
  • Ability to self-reflect/review
  • Excellent administration skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively
  • The ability to co-ordinate a team of staff within the boarding house and work with and make connections with key personnel beyond the boarding house such as the College and community leaders
