The Director of Boarding is a senior member of staff responsible for the leadership and operations of two boarding houses comprising of 120 students. This is a unique role reporting to an experienced and supportive Principal who works collaboratively. The special character of this school involves the incorporation of Anglican values into the school environment.

A full-time position has become available in one of our Boarding Houses for an

experienced, enthusiastic and dynamic Day Matron.

The successful applicant will need to be flexible, reliable, efficient, have an outgoing,

friendly, helpful disposition and a caring nature. The ability to use various computer

programs such as Microsoft Office Suite is required. This position will be term time

only.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • To be a responsible, caring, supportive adult in the House
  • Student care and supervision outside school hours
  • Manage low level student discipline and behaviour management
  • Parent point of contact in conjunction with the Housemaster
  • Support and liaise closely with the Housemaster and tutors in daily operations of
  • House and student issues
  • Co-ordinating laundry and cleaning services
  • International Student support and liaison with the Director of International Students

 The Role:

The Director of Boarding (Girls) is a key member of the senior staff and will lead the establishment and day to day operations of the first girl boarders at Mount Albert Grammar School.  Whilst the school has a long tradition of boarding, with School House for boys boarding established in 1927, 2022 will see the introduction of a boarding facility for girls.  The facility is within walking distance of the school and will see up to 30 places available for students.

This role will be varied, busy and challenging.  It has both a strategic and operational focus and involves working over a number of areas of the school including the pastoral and academic needs of students, property, employment, and financial.

The Candidate:

As Director of Boarding (Girls), you will be expected to maintain a safe and inclusive environment for all boarding students.

This position requires a person with

  • Proven experience, for a number of years, in a similar role, either leading or being an assistant director of a school hostel
  • A strong understanding of developing and implementing processes and procedures that ensure organisation compliance with legislative requirements
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written
  • An empathy for teenagers
  • A high level of professional integrity
  • Strong organization, planning, management, reflection skills
  • Substantial leadership experience with the ability to foster trust and build cohesive teams

This is a full-time position (which includes some weekend work), and the Director of Boarding (Girls) is required to live on-site.  The salary package includes accommodation, electricity and water. The Director is expected to eat meals with the girls during term time.

The successful applicant will work the following hours:

During term time

  • Sundays 10.30 pm – Monday 9:00 am;
  • Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 2.30 pm – 9:00 am the following day;
  • Attendance at Boarding House events as listed in the job description.

During term breaks 

  • 2 days in each term break, 8:00 am- 4:30 pm;
  • 1 week prior to the beginning of Term 1, 8:00 am-4.30 pm;
  • 1 week following the end of Term 4, 8:00 am-4.30 pm.
